Kathmandu: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' is set to seek a vote of confidence during today's session of the House of Representatives (HoR), scheduled for 11 am.

Preparations for the vote of confidence have been completed by the federal parliamentary secretariat ahead of the crucial parliamentary session. This move comes after the Nepali Congress withdrew its support for the Prime Minister, prompting him to seek renewed confidence from the parliamentarians.

Dahal, who also chairs the CPN (Maoist Centre), was elected Prime Minister on December 25, 2022. He previously secured a vote of confidence on January 10, 2023, with 268 out of 270 lawmakers present in the parliament expressing their confidence in his leadership.

Following changes in the ruling coalition during the presidential election, Prime Minister Dahal faced another vote of confidence on March 20, 2023, where he garnered 172 votes in the HoR.

However, with the recent shift in alliances on March 4, the Nepali Congress transitioned into the opposition, retracting its support for the government. In response, Prime Minister Dahal, now supported by a new alliance comprising CPN (UML), Rastriya Swatantra Party, Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, and CPN (Unified Socialist), is seeking another vote of confidence today.

With the new alliance issuing a whip for its members to support the Prime Minister, Dahal is expected to secure the required 138 votes for confidence. The parliamentary secretariat has listed the vote of confidence as a potential agenda item for today's HoR meeting.

Chairperson of Nagarik Unmukti Party and parliamentary party leader Ranjita Shrestha has also directed her party members to vote in favor of Prime Minister Dahal, further bolstering his chances of securing confidence from the parliament.
